MSSP News Alert: Friday 31 March 2017

Each morning MSSP Alert offers readers a quick lineup of news, analysis and chatter from across the MSSP (managed security services provider) ecosystem.

Here’s the lineup for Friday, March 31, 2017:

9. DDoS Prevention: Latin American wholesale provider GlobeNet has launched a security solution that allows carriers and ISPs to protect against DDoS attacks, Capacity Media reports.

8. Cybersecurity Research Center:  Idaho state officials approve the use of $90 million worth of bonds for the construction of two new buildings at a federal research facility, AP reported. The buildings are the Cybercore Integration Center and the Collaborative Computing Center at the Idaho National Laboratory.

7. European Compliance: Panda Security has developed a preparation guide for GDPR -- the General Data Protection Regulation. GDPR regulations, approved by the European Parliament and Council, will begin to be enforced May 25, 2018.

6. Security Win: Cylance and cStor have won an endpoint protection and cybersecurity deal with the stage of Arizona. The initial phase is expected to be completed in the spring of 2017.

5. Oracle Cloud Compliance: Oracle Cloud has achieved certifications and attestations for ISO 27001, HIPAA, SOC1 and SOC2 for a number of core services. Administered by Schellman & Co., these certifications address such areas as security, availability, processing integrity and privacy. Oracle's SaaS and PaaS platforms have been growing rapidly, but the company's IaaS offering remains a distant player behind Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure.

4. Massive Security Breach: A hacker in February 2017 gained access to about 1.4 million job seekers’ personal information on file with the Illinois Department of Employment Security’s online job board, including their names, Social Security numbers and birth dates, according to the Chicago Sun Times. The data breach happened because of a “vulnerability” in the application code of America’s Job Link Alliance, the software vendor that runs IllinoisJobLink.com, according to the report.

3. Security Market Spending: Global revenues for security-related hardware, software and services will reach $81.7 billion in 2017, up 8.2% over from 2016, IDC estimates. With that realization in mind, MSPs should strive to accelerate their security businesses at least 10 percent annually, and even that figure is conservative for many MSPs in the security sector.

2. Women in Cybersecurity: The Women in Cybersecurity conference is March 31 to April 1, 2017, in Tucson, Arizona. We're striving to track down 2018 dates now.

1. Countdown to Launch: Yup. We wrote this blog on Friday, March 31 — quite a bit before MSSP Alert’s anticipated launch day in mid-2017.
