Hughes Launches New Managed Security Platform for SMBs

Hughes Network Systems, a managed security services provider (MSSP), has launched HughesOn Secure Connectivity Services (SCS), a security and PCI compliance platform keyed to small- to medium-size businesses (SMBs).

The new HughesOn service is a secure firewall solution that comes with a plug-and-play router, continuous network management, 24/7 support, available 4G backup and optional PCI compliance software. The solution is optimized for performance and network security regardless of the type of broadband connection, according to Hughes.

Hughes is offering a variety of HughesOn SCS solutions, based on SMBs’ security needs and budgets, the MSSP said. The common denominator among the solutions is they each include a managed firewall platform and optional 4G backup. The most recent solution is founded on the Hughes HR4860 Gateway, a newly released distributed, edge-based device that combines broadband optimization and strong security capabilities. All platforms available with HughesON SCS integrate with existing network infrastructure and feature industry-leading Fortinet security technology.

(Note: Hughes just joined Fortinet’s Fabric-Ready partner program along with 10 other providers, including BackBox, CyberArk, CyGlass, IBM Security, McAfee, Micro Focus, NEC Corporation, Phantom, ServiceNow and VMware.)

“More and more businesses today are depending on cloud-based applications and in need of a managed security system,” said Mike Tippets, vice president of enterprise marketing at Hughes. “With this offering we’re bringing franchise and unbranded locations all the benefits of state-of-the-industry security and the peace-of-mind of comprehensive Hughes support – at less cost than an IT department to try and manage it all.”

HughesOn managed security solutions are tiered into five levels — each level builds upon the previous one. The levels are: managed firewall, managed content filtering, managed unified threat management (UTM), managed security information and event management (SIEM), and managed SIEM with incident response.

“Network security is not a checkbox,” wrote Tim Tang, Hughes enterprise solutions director, in a recent blog post. “It is an opportunity to create a competitive advantage by driving down operational cost, improving application performance, and effectively protect the business against tangible threats. Businesses need to ensure that their network security strategy provides a reasonable amount of security, optimizes performance and cost, and is prepared for future threats.”
