Top MSSP Companies List: Managed Security Service Providers in North America

Is there a list of the top MSSP (managed security services providers) companies worldwide? I’ve got a three-part answer.

Forrester Wave: Top North American MSSPs Q3 2016

Now, here’s top 11 MSSPs list for North America. They fit into one of three categories, according to Forrester:

  • Leaders of the Pack: Alert Logic, SecureWorks and IBM.
  • Competitive Options: CenturyLink, Symantec, NTT Security, Trustwave, and BAE Systems.
  • Laggards: Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Verizon, and AT&T lag behind.

Here’s a look at how the Forrester Wave for Q3 2016 is sorted:

Admittedly, the laggards term can be a bit misleading. When you’re positioned among 11 top MSSPs, that means you’re likely outperforming thousands of cybersecurity companies across North America. So don’t read too much into that “laggard” term. Poke around the report and Forrester also refers to those laggards as “contenders.

Now, let’s take a closer look at each company within the three tiers. The views about each company are those of MSSP Alert rather.

Forrester Top Tier: MSSPs That Lead North American

We’ve sorted them alphabetically and written our own views.

  • Alert Logic Cloud Defender: The company is gaining more momentum in the IT channel — particularly with partners that wrap security services around Amazon Web Services workloads, VP of Global Channels Michael Stoeger told MSSP Alert’s sister site (ChannelE2E) in 2016. The company’s partner ecosystem includes (1) hosting partners; (2) cloud-first and so-called born-in-the-cloud partners; (3) It solutions providers and IT solutions providers and (4) distributors, smaller MSPs and VARs.
  • IBM Managed Security Services: IBM offers firewall, host vulnerability, information event, intelligent log, intrusion detection and prevention, data protection, security rich web gateway and other management services. The secret sauce involves IBM’s X-Force Command Command Centers — which essentially are SOCs (security operations centers) spread out across the globe.
  • SecureWorks Managed Security Services: The company remains in growth mode — though not hyper-growth mode. Revenue increased 13.8 percent to $113.6 million from $99.8 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2017. The company launched Microsoft Office 365 security monitoring during the quarter.

Forrester Mid Tier: MSSPs With Competitive Options in North America

Here again, we’ve sorted them alphabetically and written our own views.

Forrester Third Tier: Contender MSSPs in North America

Yup… sorted alphabetically and our own views.

  • AT&T Managed Security Services: Like competing telcos, AT&T specializes in network security, threat management and intelligence, along with data and application security. The company brands around AT&T Threat Intellect—the “people, processes, and technologies that are the very backbone of AT&T security services.”
  • HP Enterprise Managed Security Services: We’ve got a confession. We don’t know if these represent HPE’s ongoing security and digital protection services. Or the managed security services that were spun off and combined with CSC under the new DXC moniker. We’re checking.
  • Verizon Managed Security Services: Verizon unveiled an overhauled managed security service in June 2015. It features 24 x 7 service event monitoring; 24 x 7 device availability monitoring and alerting; 24 x 7 access to security support team; security device operating system upgrades with patch management.

Top MSSPs List From MSSP Alert

Admittedly, the list above is just a start. And each company is massive. Here at MSSP Alert, we’re hard at work on a broader, deeper report that identifies top MSSPs of all sizes from across the globe.
