Finland’s Neste Investigates Large Scale IT Systems Incident

Neste Corp. on October 14 disclosed an "extensive information system failure" that is impacting the company's production operations. Service providers are assisting the investigation.

In an October 15 follow-up, Neste pointed to a a hardware failure in a service provider’s data center in Finland. The follow-up mitigated concerns that Neste had potentially suffered some sort of cyber incident.

Neste, based in Espoo, Finland, is the world's largest producer of renewable diesel refined from waste and residues. The company produces, refines and markets oil products and provides engineering services, as well as licensing production technologies. Neste operates in 14 countries and employs more than 5,000 people.

In an October 14 statement about the IT system failure, Neste said:

"The situation affects Neste Finland and Baltic process, tank and terminal areas, and causes delays in product distribution. The failure is being investigated. The situation is being investigated together with our service providers.
