Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) News: 23 October 2018

Each morning MSSP Alert broadcasts a quick lineup of news, analysis and chatter from across the global managed security services provider, SOC (security operations center) and IT outsourcing ecosystem.

Here’s the update for Tuesday, October 23, 2018.

9. Another Denial: Super Micro Computer said in a letter to customers that a media report claiming a malevolent hardware chip was installed in its motherboards is incorrect and that it is conducting a review in light of the story. Amazon Web Services and Apple have also denied the Bloomberg BusinessWeek report, and have called for the media company to retract the story. Bloomberg BusinessWeek continues to stand by the piece.

8. Layoffs: Threat Stack, a Boston-based cloud security monitoring tools and software provider, has laid off a number of employees -- though the cuts impacted fewer than 10 percent of staff members. according to Boston Business Journal.

7. Home WiFi Security: Actiontec Electronics has launched the Optim Managed WiFi Service, which protects consumers and home networks from harmful web pages, hacking, spyware, phishing, unprotected IoT devices and other cyber security threats. The service leverages cybersecurity expertise from F-Secure. Actiontec is now demonstrating the capability to broadband service providers in North America, the company says.

6. Email Protection: FireEye has introduced a no-charge evaluation service powered by FireEye Email Security, the company says.

5. Partnership - Policy Enforcement: FCI and Workplace by OS33 together have launched a Cybersecurity Policy Enforcement System. The offering combines FCI’s cybersecurity tools, known as Technical Controls, and OS33's Workplace Frontline, an endpoint detection product. OS33 was once a broad-based provider of managed workspaces for MSPs. More recently, the company has repositioned its cloud workplace platform for wealth managers seeking secure, compliant solutions.

4. Partnership - MSSP Threat Intelligence: Fujitsu America's SOCs (security operations centers) and professional services teams have embraced Cylance threat intelligence capabilities. We'll share more details soon.

3. Partnership - Identity: Fujitsu has embraced SSH.COM’s PrivX Cloud Access Gateway to complement its Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) offering, the companies say.

2. Backup Software Vulnerabilities: Arcserve has patched four vulnerabilities with its Unified Data Protection platform. Digital Defense Inc., a security technology and services provider, discovered the issues.

1. Ryuk Ransomware: A Ryuk ransomware campaign targeting large organizations in the U.S. and around the world has made the attackers behind it over $640,000 in bitcoin in the space of just two weeks, according to Perch, the master MSSP backed by ConnectWise and Fishtech Group. It appears to be connected to Lazarus, the hacking group working out of North Korea, the company says.
