Managed Security Services Provider (MSSP) News: 25 May 2018

Each morning MSSP Alert broadcasts a quick lineup of news, analysis and chatter from across the global managed security services provider, SOC (security operations center) and IT outsourcing ecosystem.

Here’s the lineup for Friday, May 25, 2018.

10. Alexa Privacy: Amazon on Thursday described an “unlikely... string of events” that made Alexa send an audio recording of a family to one of their contacts randomly. The episode underscored how Alexa can misinterpret conversation as a wake-up call and command, Reuters says...

9. Investments: NightDragon Security, a dedicated cybersecurity investment firm, today announced the appointment of Ken Gonzalez as Managing Director. NightDragon Security, which was formerly cybersecurity veteran Dave DeWalt’s personal investment vehicle, will now broaden its scope to invest in cybersecurity companies alongside venture capital and private equity investors, the organization says. DeWalt and Gonzalez previously were senior executives at such companies as Documentum, EMC, Siebel Systems (Oracle), McAfee, Mandiant, Avast and FireEye.

8. New York Data Breaches Sets Record:  In 2017, companies and other entities reported 1,583 data breaches to the New York Attorney General. The breaches exposed the personal records of 9.2 million New Yorkers – quadruple the number of New Yorkers impacted in 2016.

7. Healthcare Data Breach: LifeBridge Health has notified 500,000 patients that their personal information may have been exposed in a cyber attack recently discovered by the health system, according to The Baltimore Sun.

6. Security: Lastline Breach Defender, a network traffic analytics product that improves network breach protection, SOC team productivity, and remediation effectiveness, has launched, the company says.

5. Research Center: Symantec has opened a privacy research center, based in Saarbrucken, Germany. The new location’s effort is two-fold; to give consumers greater control over their personal data and their online “footprints,” and provide governments and corporations additional tools to help them be responsible custodians of data they handle, Symantec says.

4. Partnership: Insight Enterprises will include SecurityFirst DataKeep within its Insight Intelligent Technology Solutions security portfolio. The move adds a "strong data-centric layer of defense for customers guarding data against unapproved access and potential loss," the companies say.

3. Platform Suite: Kroll has launched a CyberDetectER product suite, which "gives organizations an unprecedented continuum of solutions to proactively monitor, detect, and respond to data threats on endpoints, across the surface web, and throughout the deep and dark web," the company claims.

2. Honoree: Opus Consulting Group, a managed business solutions provider in Western Canada, has earned the Sophos Partner of the Year honor for the second consecutive year.

1. SIEM: Siemplify has launched version 4.0 of its security orchestration and automation platform for MSSPs and enterprise customers. We'll share more thoughts soon.
