One Identity, a Quest Software company that specializes in identity and access management (IAM), has acquired privileged access management (PAM) and log management solutions provider Balabit for an undisclosed sum. The acquisition represents One Identity's first as an independent company; One Identity began operating as an independent company in June 2016.

With the Balabit acquisition, One Identity adds machine learning-driven, privileged account analytics to its PAM solutions, according to a prepared statement. The acquisition also enables One Identity to drive future development of Balabit technology to help organizations address PAM challenges.

What Is Balabit?

Balabit's session management technology previously was embedded into the One Identity Safeguard privileged account security solution via an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) partnership. The company's PAM capabilities work in conjunction with existing security tools and enable organizations to deploy a flexible and people-centric approach to improve security, One Identity noted.

The Balabit solutions portfolio features several PAM products, including:

  • Privileged Account Analytics: Identifies suspicious activity and offers outputs such as risk-based alerts and automated session termination.
  • Privileged Session Management: Controls privileged access to remote IT systems, records activities in searchable audit trails and prevents malicious actions.
  • syslog-ng: Collects log data to help organizations understand what is happening in an IT environment.

One Identity and Balabit together enable organizations to know what entitlements their employees and privileged users have and what they are doing with those entitlements, One Identity Senior Director of Product Management Jackson Shaw said in a prepared statement. Balabit also provides identity analytics capabilities that complement the One Identity Starling identity analytics and risk intelligence (IARI) solution; this software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution was unveiled in August and helps organizations detect cyber threats and inspect anomalies to remediate risk.

Furthermore, Balabit has a global partner network that will be incorporated into the One Identity Partner Circle, which includes managed service providers (MSPs), value-added resellers (VARs) and other channel partners. This will enable both Balabit and One Identity partners to expand the scope and reach of their offerings.
