Trend Micro Unveils AI-Powered MDR Service for MSSPs

Trend Micro, a global cybersecurity solutions provider, has unveiled a managed detection and response (MDR) service that allows MSSPs to use artificial intelligence (AI) to identify and correlate security threats.

The Trend Micro MDR service enables MSSPs to add AI-powered incident response offerings to their portfolios, according to a prepared statement. It leverages AI to retrieve threat information from multiple sources and analyze massive amounts of security data to stop cyber threats.

Key features of the Trend Micro MDR service include:

  • Endpoint Protection: Queries endpoints for specific communications, malware and various endpoint activities.
  • Threat Hunting: Uses multiple threat hunting techniques to identify cyber threats and create a root cause analysis.
  • Threat Visibility: Investigates cyber threats by searching for indicators of compromise (IOC) and indicators of attacks (IOAs).

The MDR service also automates prioritization of threat information across user endpoints, networks and servers, Trend Micro said. By doing so, the service helps MSSP streamline security orchestration and response and triage critical threat alerts.

What Does the Future Hold for the MDR Services Market?

The new Trend Micro service may help MSSPs capitalize on the rising demand for MDR services in the years to come.

Approximately 15 percent of organizations will be using MDR services by 2020, up from less than 5 percent today, according to technology research firm Gartner. Also, about 25 percent of all inquiries in 2017 related to acquiring security event monitoring services were linked to MDR.

Many MSSPs have added MDR-type offerings that supplement their existing services over the past 12 months, Gartner indicated. Furthermore, Gartner expects MSSPs to segment their MDR services and package them into specific offerings in the foreseeable future.

Trend Micro Bolsters Its Container Security Solution

In addition to launching its MDR service, Trend Micro this month upgraded its Deep Security Smart Check container protection solution.

Deep Security Smart Check now scans container images before deployment to identify malware and other security vulnerabilities, according to Trend Micro. That way, development and operations (DevOps) teams can use Deep Security Smart Check to resolve security issues before an application is released.

Trend Micro offers hybrid cloud security, network defense and user protection products and solutions to customers worldwide. It recorded consolidated net sales of $351 million in the first quarter of 2018 and is projecting total sales of nearly $1.5 billion this year.
