VMworld 2018: VMware Unveils App, Infrastructure Security Upgrades

VMware today introduced vSphere Platinum Edition for application and infrastructure security, vSphere 6.7 Update 1, a new version of its vSAN hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) solution and updates to its vRealize cloud management platform (CMP) at its VMworld 2018 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.

vSphere Platinum Edition combines vSphere’s native security capabilities with the VMware AppDefense data center endpoint security product, according to a prepared statement. It enables vSphere administrators to leverage machine learning and behavioral analytics to deliver secure applications and infrastructure.

With vSphere 6.7 Update 1, vSphere administrators can use an HTML5-based vSphere Client to manage virtual infrastructure, VMware indicated. vSphere 6.7 also includes vMotion live migration and snapshot capabilities for NVIDIA Quadro vDWS-powered virtual machines (VMs).

vSAN 6.7 Update 1 is designed to help organizations speed up HCI adoption, VMware noted. It provides users with access to granular diagnostic tools and historical data to support HCI environments.

Meanwhile, VMware has announced the following vRealize offerings:

  • vRealize Operations 7.0: Enables users to control hybrid cloud workload placement.
  • vRealize Automation 7.5: Allows users to leverage a programmable provisioning and application operations approach to deliver developer-friendly infrastructure.
  • vRealize Suite 2018: Provides a hybrid cloud management platform that helps developers build applications in any cloud environment.

The aforementioned vSphere, vSAN and vRealize offerings are expected to be available by Nov. 2.

VMware Unveils NSX Upgrades

In addition to the vSphere, vSAN and vRealize announcements, VMware today unveiled NSX-T Data Center 2.3, a new version of its NSX networking and security product.

NSX-T Data Center 2.3 streamlines installation, configuration and management with deployment workflows and search functionality for objects and events, VMware stated. It installs components via a simplified workflow and includes a search interface that enables users to instantly identify objects and events within the NSX-T system.

Furthermore, NSX-T Data Center 2.3 provides multi-cloud networking and security capabilities across Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and on-premises environments, according to VMware. It also supports bare metal hosts and hypervisor and container environments, including Linux-based workloads running on bare-metal servers and containers running on bare-metal servers without a hypervisor.

NSX-T Data Center 2.3 is expected to be released by Nov. 2.
