Managed Security Services Provider Morning News: 2 October 2017

Each morning MSSP Alert broadcasts a quick lineup of news, analysis and chatter from across the global managed security services provider, SOC (security operations center) and IT outsourcing ecosystem.

Here’s the lineup for Monday, October 2, 2017:

11. Ransomware Attacks Gamer Platform: R6DB, an online service that provides statistics for Rainbow Six Siege players, went down over the weekend after an attacker wiped the company's database and asked a ransom, according to BleepingComputer. The attack took down the service Saturday, September 30. In a statement released on Sunday, the company said an automated bot accessed their server, wiped the database, and left a ransom note behind. The database appears to be a PostgreSQL instance, the report said.

10. Google Security: Google apparently will offer email security upgrades to high-profile executives, according to multiple reports. Alas, I don't think I qualify...

9. SMB Cyber Policies: The U.S. Senate has passed small business cybersecurity legislation. What does it involve? We'll share more perspectives later today.

8. WordPress Security: A hacker hid a backdoor inside a fake WordPress security plugin. PS: MSSP Alert doesn't use the plugin...

7. MSSP Win: VirtualArmour, an MSSP in Canada, has one an $800,000 managed IT and cybersecurity contract with an existing client. We don't know the company's name but we do know VirtualArmour has momentum. We'll share more details soon.

6. Managed Cyber Services: Axians has inked a deal to monitor and manage Datanet's core network and mitigate cyber threats, the two companies say.

5. SOC Analytics: Arctic Wolf Networks, a security operations center (SOC)-as-a-service company, now supports Splunk Enterprise to accelerate the deployment of AWN CyberSOC service for Splunk customers.

4. M&A: INVL Technology has acquired Deltagon Group Oy, a Finnish cyber security company. The price of the acquisition is EUR $4.882 million -- or roughly US $5.73 million.

3. M&A: Tracker Capital Management has acquired root9B LLC. Financial terms were not disclosed. The cybersecurity company has roughly 90 employees. Customers include U.S. Cyber Command and the U.S. Air Force.

2. Windows Defender Malware?: Researchers have developed a method for bypassing Windows Defender that will allow any malware to execute on a Windows machine, according to ThreatPost. Microsoft, meanwhile, has told the experts that it does not see this as a security issue and will not address the problem in its native antimalware protection, the report said.

1. Las Vegas Blood Donations: Amid the mass shootings in Las Vegas on Sunday night, thousands of IT experts are heading to that city for this week's NetApp Insight and Continuum Navigate conferences, respectively. If you're in the area, police are asking you to donate blood. United Blood Services started taking donations at 7 a.m. today (Monday) at two locations:

  • 6930 W. Charleston in Las Vegas
  • 601 Whitney Ranch Drive in Henderson

Also, UMC will host a blood drive in conjunction with United Blood Services. It will be held at UMC’s Delta Point Building located at 901 N. Rancho Lane. There will be updates as to the exact time of the blood drive as more information is available, according to Las Vegas Police.
