10. Kaspersky vs. US Government: A U.S. federal judge on Wednesday dismissed two lawsuits by Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab that sought to overturn bans on the use of the security software maker’s products in U.S. government networks, Reuters says. The federal government banned Kaspersky's software on agency networks, alleging the company may have ties to Russia's government. Kaspersky has repeatedly denied the accusations.
9. Software Probes: U.S. tech companies would be forced to disclose if they allowed American adversaries, like Russia and China, to examine the inner workings of software sold to the U.S. military under proposed legislation, Senate staff told Reuters.
8. Election Security: Federal and New York state officials will hold drills in the weeks leading up to primary elections for the U.S. House and Senate to prevent hacking and other cyber threats to voting systems.
7. Multiple Bank Breaches: Bank of Mexico Governor Alejandro Diaz de Leon on Wednesday said no further cyber attacks on banks had been seen since May 8, but that investigators would need to finish their probe to assure banks’ vulnerabilities have been addressed. Hackers, leveraging bogus money transfers, allegedly stole roughly $20 million from five Mexico banks. And north of the the U.S. boarder, Bank of Montreal and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce disclosed this week that cyber attackers may have stolen the data of nearly 90,000 customers in what appeared to be the first significant assault on financial institutions in the country, Reuters reported.
6. IoT Data Exposure: It's been three years since researchers first discovered automated tank gauges (ATGs) at some 5,000 US gas stations exposed on the public Internet without password protection, and a recent scan found 5,635 locations were vulnerable to the same issue, Dark Reading reports.
5. Cyber Law: South Carolina has become the first state to pass a cybersecurity bill requiring any insurance entity operating in the state to establish and implement a cybersecurity program protecting their business and their customers from a data breach, Insurance Journal reports.
4. M&A: VASCO Data Security has rebranded as OneSpan, acquired Dealflo for £41 million (US$55 million) in cash and introduced a Trusted Identity (TID) platform.
3. Talent: Bitdefender has appointed Michael Gable as VP of its Data Center Group, a new division focused solely on cloud and data center security. He previously held key posts at Malwarebytes, LANDESK and CloudPassage.
2. MSSP Rebrand: Federal Data Systems has rebranded its commercial cybersecurity business line as Domain5 -- positioning the business unit to offer managed security services for small and midsize customers, BizJournals notes.
