1. Anti-Scam Alliance Launches: Bitdefender, a global cybersecurity company, has joined the Global Anti-Scam Alliance (GASA), a consortium with the goal to strategize protection of consumers from fraud, as a foundation and advisory board member. The partnership is designed to help combat a sharp increase of sophisticated online and mobile-based (SMS) scams. Bitdefender product lines incorporate core anti-malware protection along with digital identity protection and solutions for protecting user privacy, the company said.
2. N-able for Sale?: N-Able, a U.S. provider of information technology software with a market value of about $2.5 billion, is reportedly exploring a sale after attracting acquisition interest. The Burlington, Massachusetts-based company, which counts private equity firms Silver Lake and Thoma Bravo as major investors, is running a sale process in which peers in the software sector and private equity firms are participating. 3. Canadian Cybersecurity Center Opens: ThreatLocker, a provider of zero trust cybersecurity solutions, has launched its latest data center in Toronto, Canada, less than three months after opening its data center in Sydney, Australia. This initiative will significantly bolster cybersecurity capabilities for Canadian businesses and organizations across various sectors, including the private sector, commonwealth, state, territory and local governments, the company said.
4. MSP Perspectives Report Issued: Sophos, a specialist in security solutions that defeat cyberattacks, has released its inaugural “MSP Perspectives 2024” survey report. Sophos found that the biggest day-to-day challenge facing MSPs is keeping up with the latest cybersecurity solutions/technologies, cited by 39% of the MSPs surveyed. Alongside this, MSPs indicated that hiring new cybersecurity analysts to keep up with customer growth and keep pace with the latest cyberthreats were also top challenges.
5. Leadership Move: Token, a provider of secure, wearable authentication solutions, has appointed Robert Osterwise as chief technology officer and Tim Tonges as chief revenue officer. Osterwise and Tonges join Token’s executive leadership team reporting to CEO John Gunn. Osterwise held the role of vice president Advanced Technology, head of IoT, Digital Innovation, Emerging Technologies, at Stanley Black & Decker. Before his tenure at Stanley Black & Decker, Osterwise was technical director at AT&T and held senior technology roles at Giesecke & Devrient. Tonges brings more than 20 years of sales leadership experience with technology and cybersecurity solutions at leading companies including FusionStorm, Bell Microproducts and Pomeroy.
6. MSP Security Partnership: SureShield, a specialist in security, compliance and integrity technology solutions, announced that it is providing critical support for the CompTIA Cybersecurity Trustmark program. MSPs partnered with SureShield now have access to the Trustmark safeguards. The Trustmark program aims to help MSPs bring about a positive shift in their overall cybersecurity culture and improve their risk posture, SureShield said.
7. U.S. Treasury Sanctions Cybercriminals: The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has designated three individuals, Yunhe Wang, Jingping Liu, and Yanni Zheng, for their activities associated with the malicious botnet tied to the residential proxy service known as 911 S5. OFAC also sanctioned three entities — Spicy Code Company Limited, Tulip Biz Pattaya Group Company Limited and Lily Suites Company Limited — for being owned or controlled by Yunhe Wang.
8. Russian Threat Actor Indicted: A 31-year-old Russian national, Evgeniy Doroshenko, has been indicted for wire and computer fraud in the United States for allegedly acting as an "initial access broker" from February 2019 to May 2024. Doroshenko, allegedly known online by the aliases "FlankerWWH" and "Flanker," is accused of gaining unauthorized access to corporate networks and then offering to sell this access on Russian-language cybercrime forums. 9. Seattle Public Library Reports Ransomware Attack: The Seattle Public Library’s online catalog, e-books, Wi-Fi and public computers were taken offline Tuesday, as the library investigated what it described as a ransomware event. A statement from the library read: "In the early morning hours of Saturday, May 25 — just one day before we were prepared to take our systems offline to conduct planned maintenance on a server over Memorial Day weekend — the library became aware of a ransomware event affecting our technology systems."
10. New Korean Threat Actor Surfaces: Microsoft reports that it has identified a new North Korean threat actor, now tracked as Moonstone Sleet (formerly Storm-1789). Moonstone Sleet uses both a combination of techniques that are used by other North Korean threat actors and unique attack methodologies to target companies for its financial and cyberespionage objectives. Moonstone Sleet has been observed setting up fake companies and job opportunities to engage with potential targets, employ trojanized versions of legitimate tools, create a malicious game and deliver a new custom ransomware, Microsoft said.
