Sandbox-as-a-Service: Here’s What MSSPs Need to Know

Share
MSSPs now can integrate sandboxing capabilities into their perimeter security services to deliver "sandbox-as-a-service," according to antivirus and malware protection solutions provider Fortinet.

Sandbox-as-a-service involves the use of a sandbox in conjunction with firewall, email security and virtualization tools. Together, these tools empower MSSPs to create a cooperative, layered and highly adaptable security architecture to safeguard customers against cyber threats, Fortinet indicated.

In addition, Fortinet pointed out that sandbox-as-a-service enables MSSPs to deploy a three-step approach to address cyberattacks:

  1. Mitigation: MSSPs can leverage unified threat management (UTM) and next-generation firewall (NGFW) products in combination with cybersecurity services and threat intelligence to protect customers against cyberattacks.
  2. Discovery: With sandboxing technology, MSSPs can identify unknown threats that are already present or tried to enter a customer's network.
  3. Response: MSSPs can leverage an incident response service to resolve any threats that have breached a customer's network.

Ultimately, sandbox-as-a-service can help MSSPs simultaneously increase their revenues and profit margins and protect their customers against cyberattacks, Fortinet said. It also provides a unique offering that differentiates an MSSP from its competitors, Fortinet noted, and positions a services provider to benefit from the rising demand for cloud-based security.

Global cloud security spending is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 28 percent between 2016 and 2021, market research firm Forrester said in a prepared statement. Furthermore, Forrester has projected global cloud security spending will reach $3.5 billion by 2021.

Fortinet Offers Sandbox-as-a-Service for MSSPs

Fortinet today provides FortiSandbox, which enables MSSPs to add sandbox-as-a-service to their portfolios.

Available as an appliance or virtual machine (VM), FortiSandbox blends advanced detection, automated mitigation, actionable insights and flexible deployment to help MSSPs protect their customers against targeted attacks and subsequent data loss, Fortinet said. It also integrates with Fortinet and non-Fortinet security products via the Fortinet Security Fabric to streamline the disruption of zero-day threats.

Fortinet delivers content and network security and secure access products that share intelligence, the company stated. It ranks first among most security appliances shipped worldwide, the company said, and more than 320,000 customers leverage Fortinet products to protect their businesses against cyberattacks.
