Sumo Logic Acquires JASK: Cloud SIEM, SOC Converge for MSSPs

Sumo Logic has acquired JASK Labs. The deal unites cloud-based SIEM (security information and event management), autonomous SOC (security operations center) and analytics software for VARs, MSPs and MDR (managed detection and response) service providers. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The deal comes at a key time. Thousands of MSPs and aspiring MSSPs (managed security services providers) are struggling to select security automation platforms and/or SOC as a Service (SOCaaS) options. Indeed, the market is crowded with at least 20 SOCaaS offerings as of October 2019.

Sumo Logic, armed with JASK, hopes to attract aspiring and established MSSPs and MDR providers onto its platforms. Sumo Logic, which offers cloud-based SIEM, earlier this year raised $110 million in funding led by investment firm Battery Ventures. Key Sumo Logic integration partners include eSentire, SentinelOne, and CloudPassage. By contrast, the channel drove two-thirds of JASK's autonomous SOC and SIEM business in the first quarter of 2019.

True believers in the deal include Optiv, a Top 200 MSSP for 2019. In a prepared statement, Optiv Americas CTO Todd Weber said: "Optiv is thrilled to see two of our leading cloud-native partners join forces under the Sumo Logic banner. Together, we can accelerate our joint offerings in the market for next generation security intelligence solutions that our customers are demanding as they navigate digital transformation and the shift to multi-cloud computing."

Eager to build on that partner momentum, JASK CEO Greg Martin shifts to VP and GM of the Sumo Logic security business unit. An undisclosed number of JASK employees will also join the buyer.

Among the key technology components to note:

  • The Sumo Logic Continuous Intelligence Platform supports hybrid and multi-cloud infrastructures and dynamic workloads, along with on-demand security analytics.
  • JASK ASOC improves workflows for security analysts by addressing alert fatigue and automating these repetitive tasks, the companies say.
  • As part of Sumo Logic’s Continuous Intelligence Platform, the company will launch Sumo Logic ASOC solution, as well as a Spec Ops offering for threat hunting, which is expected to be available by the end of the year, the company says.

The technologies certainly appear to fit well together. But we'll be watching to see how the software integration teams execute on their plan.

Although the two businesses appear to fit together well, recent chatter from CRN suggests JASK needed to find a buyer amid cash burn rate challenges.
