Managed Security Services Morning News: 30 May 2017

5. U.S. Cybersecurity: Pending legislation and multiple bills could allow U.S. states to manage and safeguard pre-digital infrastructure amid major attacks, according to StateScoop. The legislation would allow the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to award grants to states for the purposes of adopting cybersecurity best practices, building the cybersecurity workforce, protecting critical communications infrastructure, mitigating threats to key resources, and coordinating across jurisdictions, the report says...

4. Cybersecurity, MSSP Partnership: Proficio, an MSSP delivering managed detection and response (MDR), has signed a strategic alliance with Necsia IT Consulting, which delivers cybersecurity and digital transformation services. Necsia will offer customers Proficio managed cybersecurity services, including global 24x7 monitoring and alerting, advanced threat detection and automated response.

3. Cybersecurity Talent: IBM Security today announced an initiative to help address the projected 1.8 million-person cybersecurity worker shortage through programs and partnerships that promote a "new collar" cybersecurity workforce strategy, the company said. As part of the effort, IBM is sponsoring alternative education models such as Hacker Highschool and Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH). Ironically, IBM itself has had multiple rounds of layoffs while "rebalancing" its own workforce for security, cognitive computing and other emerging opportunities. We'll share more thoughts on the IBM Security talent efforts on Wednesday.

2. China Cybersecurity: China is activating a cybersecurity law that bans online service providers from collecting and selling users' personal information, and gives users the right to have their information deleted, according to Reuters. MSPs and CSPs in the region are formulating plans to comply with the law.

1. Bracing for Hajime Botnet: Security researchers are closely monitoring the Hajime botnet, which apparently has infiltrated more than 300,000 IoT devices worldwide. Infected systems include routers and IP cameras. It's unclear if or how the botnet's creator will unleash some sort of attack. Kaspersky Lab researchers shared early research about the botnet a few weeks ago...
