Education sector faces significant cybersecurity challenges, Barracuda report finds

The education sector is facing significant cybersecurity challenges, particularly concerning ransomware and account takeover attacks delivered via email, presenting opportunities for managed service providers, Channeldive reports.

Barracuda Networks' research indicates that educational institutions are highly susceptible to email-borne threats, with nearly 1,200 phishing emails targeting each institution daily over a three-month period. Despite detecting and blocking a substantial portion of these attacks, over one-third of education organizations struggle to confirm every incident, suggesting some attacks may go undetected. Furthermore, only 56% of educational institutions can secure accounts and restore operations within a day of an email security incident, a slower recovery time compared to other industries.

Nearly 1 in 5 educational institutions reported taking up to a week to restore normal operations, the highest proportion across all surveyed sectors. This prolonged downtime increases the potential impact of security incidents. A significant contributing factor is a lack of expertise in rapid incident response, with more than a third of respondents citing insufficient skills and a third admitting to slow reactions. Human error and user behavior are also identified as major contributors.

The report highlights a strong interest in AI-assisted detection and investigation tools within the education sector, with over 40% of respondents welcoming such technologies. These findings underscore an opportunity for MSPs to offer security audits, process improvements, and incident response protocols to address the expertise gap and enhance security posture.
