Fortinet acquires Virtue AI to expand security for AI agents

Fortinet has acquired Virtue AI, adding technology for AI runtime protection, automated validation and autonomous agent security to its broader Security for AI portfolio. The acquisition extends Fortinet’s focus into the growing attack surface created by enterprise AI deployments, including models, prompts, agents, APIs and Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools.

Virtue AI brings several capabilities that Fortinet plans to incorporate into its AI-Native Security Fabric. These include red-teaming autonomous agents across simulated environments, discovering unsanctioned AI applications and agents, scanning MCP tools and source code, monitoring agent behavior and blocking malicious tool calls. Its technology can also continuously test models as they are updated or fine-tuned and generate evidence that security and compliance teams can use during reviews.

The acquisition builds on FortiAIGate, which Fortinet introduced earlier this year to protect large language models against risks such as prompt injection, data leakage, model poisoning and excessive resource consumption. Virtue AI adds testing and runtime controls across AI models, applications and agentic systems, including guardrails for text, images, video, audio and AI-generated code. Fortinet said the combination will allow it to apply security controls throughout the development and production lifecycle of AI systems.

For Fortinet, the deal adds another security layer as enterprises move AI agents into production and give them greater access to applications, data and business processes. That shift is creating demand for tools that can identify what agents are doing, test how they respond to attacks and stop risky actions before they reach other systems. Adding Virtue AI gives Fortinet more of those capabilities inside its existing security portfolio and puts AI validation, governance and runtime protection into the same broader platform strategy.
