Fortinet Inc. has expanded its network security portfolio by integrating artificial intelligence protection directly into its existing FortiGate firewalls through the new FortiGuard Inline AI Security Service, according to a report by Silicone Angle.
The service utilizes guardrails from FortiAIGate to inspect prompts sent to large language models and agents in real time. By delivering these protections via the cloud to existing firewalls, the company eliminates the need for a separate security stack. The system masks sensitive data and prevents unauthorized interactions that traditional tools, which rely on IP addresses and signatures, often miss. The updated data loss prevention engine now identifies 35 categories of confidential information. Furthermore, the platform allows administrators to enforce compliance policies and manage compute costs by capping usage per user or team.
Organizations with strict privacy needs can deploy FortiAIGate on-premises using Nvidia Corp. hardware to ensure data remains within their environment. Following the acquisition of Virtue AI Inc., Fortinet has integrated advanced guardrails to monitor AI infrastructure, addressing concerns regarding shadow AI and unsanctioned agents. This approach provides a centralized method for governance, security, and cost management, helping enterprises scale their AI adoption safely while maintaining visibility into all internal model interactions and tool calls.
