Iridium CEO highlights advanced PNT technology ahead of competitors

Satellite operator Iridium is experiencing significant customer interest in its advanced positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) technology. CEO Matt Desch expressed surprise at the level of customer astonishment, noting that potential buyers are impressed not just by performance but by the very existence of a solution they believed was years away from market availability, with further coverage provided by SDx Central.

Iridium's PNT technology, integrated into an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), offers a new layer of security against GPS spoofing and jamming. This chip, commercially released in July, enables cryptographically secure PNT data through one-way signal bursts, verifying Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) information independently. The technology stems from a decade-long development, originating from a Boeing science project and evolving through Iridium's acquisition of partner company Satelles.

The ASIC can be integrated into various devices, including routers, edge devices, and smartphones, providing a 'trusted location' capability to authenticate data origination and passage. This innovation comes at a critical time as massive digital systems increasingly rely on accurate timing and positioning, with demand for PNT resilience particularly high in regions experiencing geopolitical conflict and cyber threats.
