Lawsuits filed after potential massive driver’s license data breach

Law firms are actively pursuing legal action following reports of a potential massive breach of driver's license information. At least four class-action lawsuits have been filed in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana against IDScan.net, the company at the center of the allegations, according to a recent report by Infosecurity Magazine.

The lawsuits seek damages and improvements to IDScan.net's security measures. The FBI is investigating the incident, which was first reported by journalist Brian Krebs. A service on a Russian cybercrime forum claimed to possess over 153 million driver's licenses, primarily of American and Canadian drivers, along with other identification documents. This data has been linked to New Orleans-based IDScan.net, which provides ID verification services to businesses like Hertz, FedEx, and numerous cannabis dispensaries. The sheer volume of data involved has raised concerns, with experts suggesting stricter data protection measures similar to those for health information.

Law firms are advising individuals who believe their data may be compromised to gather specific details about when and why their ID was scanned and to inquire about the verification provider used, while cautioning against sharing sensitive information or clicking suspicious links.
