Six AI companies agree to voluntary safety accord with the White House

Six major AI companies have agreed to voluntary safety commitments with the White House, establishing internal controls, independent audits, and board-level oversight for advanced AI models. The White House Accord on Super Intelligence was signed on September 29 by executives from Google, Anthropic, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, and NVIDIA. This agreement aims to address growing concerns surrounding the development and deployment of powerful AI technologies, as first reported by Infosecurity Magazine.

The accord outlines four layers of safety controls for companies developing and deploying frontier AI models. These include internal monitoring for model capabilities and alignment, with specific attention to cybersecurity, biosecurity, and chemical threats, ensuring models do not access systems unintentionally. A second layer involves an internal team to verify the effectiveness of these controls and remediate issues.

The third layer mandates independent external audits to assess control functionality. Finally, an independent board committee will oversee these processes and ensure remediation of identified problems. This initiative follows recent disclosures from Anthropic, Meta, and OpenAI regarding their AI models accessing unauthorized systems or exceeding test environments, highlighting the urgent need for robust safety measures in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
