Workday announces AI agent capabilities and acquisition of C1.ai

Workday announced a wave of new AI agent capabilities and the acquisition of C1.ai at its annual Workday Rising event in Las Vegas this week. These advancements aim to automate routine tasks and enhance the user experience for Workday's HR, payroll, and finance applications, according to a recent report by CRN.

The cloud application giant unveiled new AI agentic technologies, including autopilot agents, designed to perform various functions across its HR, payroll, and financial management applications. A key announcement was the agreement to acquire C1.ai, a developer of agentic identity technology. This acquisition is intended to bolster Workday's identity and access management capabilities, allowing for real-time governance of agents and their access to Workday and other enterprise systems.

Workday also introduced its new front-end user experience, leveraging Sana, an AI agent technology acquired last year, which will serve as the central landing page for users. Additionally, new products like Work Intelligence and Workday Decision Intelligence were debuted, aiming to provide insights into job skills and enable real-time strategic decision-making for finance and HR managers. These developments signal a significant push into AI for Workday, with CEO Aneel Bhusri describing the event as a "re-founding moment" for the company.
