Trend Micro Acquires Cloud Security Configuration Company

Trend Micro has acquired Cloud Conformity, a software platform that helps partners and customers to spot and mitigate cloud security misconfigurations across Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

All of Cloud Conformity's employees  -- including 50 developers and engineers -- will join Trend Micro. Cloud Conformity, founded in 2016, has 100-plus customers and offices in Sydney, Australia; Dallas, Texas; London, United Kingdom; Montreal, Canada and Singapore. Financial terms of the deal and specific revenue figures for Cloud Conformity were not disclosed.

The acquisition comes at a key time. Numerous companies have suffered data leaks because they misconfigured AWS, Microsoft Azure or GCP, among other public cloud services providers. Many times, the misconfigurations involve IT and business consultants working with customer data in public clouds.

Aiming to mitigate those risks, the core Cloud Conformity platform has more than 520 out-of-the-box, real-time AWS infrastructure best practice rule checks with manual remediation and self-healing capability, the company says. Moreover, the platform enables continuous detection and correction of all best practice violations, Cloud Conformity asserts.

Describing the acquisition, Trend Micro CEO Eva Chen said:

“We have been laser focused on building integrated security for the cloud since its birth over a decade ago, unlike other vendors who are now attempting to stitch together disparate cloud technologies. As more enterprises move to the cloud, our customers feel they’re operating amid a wild-west approach to cloud implementations that leave them with unmanaged risk. As an AWS technology partner of the year for 2019, Cloud Conformity understands these implementations and the risks. Their offering perfectly complements our own portfolio and provides immediate value to customers. Both the people and technology are a great fit for Trend Micro.”

Added Cloud Conformity CEO Michael Watts:

“We are excited for the opportunities that will come from being part of the leading cloud security provider – amplifying what we do best, while allowing our offerings to expand in ways we couldn’t have done on our own. We think customers will love this simplified approach to security and compliance across their entire cloud environment, including AWS, Azure and Google Cloud – providing security guardrails to let them go faster and do more.”

Trend Micro and MSPs

Trend Micro roughly a decade ago was one of the first endpoint security companies to introduce MSP-friendly, SaaS-based platforms for MSPs. But more recently, the company has competed a bit with MSPs --- including the launch of Cysiv, an enterprise-focused MSSP that offers cyber risk management as a service.
