Varonis Expands into Email Security with SlashNext

Varonis is taking its data security expertise into the inbox with the acquisition of SlashNext, a company known for AI-powered detection of phishing and social engineering attacks. The deal adds another layer to Varonis’ approach, giving security leaders coverage at one of the most common entry points for breaches: email and other communication tools.

“Every CISO wants consolidation,” Rob Sobers, CMO of Varonis told MSSP Alert. “By combining data security with identity and email, VARs and MSSPs will have a complete story around data breach prevention from a single vendor. So many data breaches begin in the inbox, result in a stolen identity, followed by data exfiltration. Varonis now has eyes on each phase of that attack flow.”

Attackers are exploiting every communication channel they can reach. Email is still the most common entry point, but platforms like Slack, Teams, and WhatsApp are increasingly used to launch phishing and business email compromise (BEC) attacks. By bringing SlashNext into its portfolio, Varonis is extending its reach from protecting sensitive data at rest to defending the first point of contact: the inbox.

End-to-end Threat Detection

SlashNext uses predictive AI models that combine computer vision, natural language processing, and virtual browsers. These techniques help the system recognize and block threats that bypass traditional defenses. Independent testing from the Tolly Group showed SlashNext outperforming providers like Abnormal Security and Mimecast, achieving a 99% overall detection accuracy and perfect results against BEC and QR code attacks.

“The current solutions MSSPs and VARs sell still miss a large number of threats,” Sobers added. “Even the modern solutions like Abnormal. Customers are still falling victim to phishing. SlashNext is orders of magnitude better. Now, combine that with ITDR and our Managed Data Detection and Response managed services offering, and the result is end-to-end threat detection from the first point of attack to the last.”

The Bigger Picture

For Varonis, the acquisition addresses a gap CISOs have long struggled with: connecting identity, email, and data security into a single picture. The company’s Managed Data Detection and Response (MDDR) service can now move earlier in the attack chain, giving customers visibility and response capabilities at the moment social engineering threats are delivered.

Sobers emphasized the ease of demonstrating value to customers. “SlashNext deploys extremely quickly and shows results immediately via an Email Risk Assessment,” he said. “Partners can deploy SlashNext in parallel with Abnormal and very easily show the difference in efficacy.”

This deal also positions Varonis in a growing market. Email security spending is projected to more than double between 2025 and 2032, driven largely by the rise of AI-fueled phishing. By integrating SlashNext, Varonis is signaling that preventing breaches now means tackling human-targeted attacks head-on.

The acquisition of SlashNext underscores how email has become inseparable from data security. With attackers leaning heavily on AI to craft convincing messages, the line between protecting data and protecting people is disappearing. Varonis is betting that unifying those protections, while giving partners a clearer business case, will define the next phase of breach prevention.
