SMBs grapple with AI governance amid rapid adoption

Small and midsize businesses are facing significant challenges in governing artificial intelligence as they accelerate its adoption. A recent survey highlights that while many SMBs are actively developing and deploying AI tools, they are struggling to keep pace with the necessary oversight and security measures, as detailed in Channeldive.

The survey of 1,150 SMB leaders revealed that two-thirds regularly use self-built AI tools, yet over one-third discovered unapproved shadow AI use in the past six months. Standard AI review processes are proving inadequate, with only 36% of respondents formally reviewing or approving internally built AI. This rapid deployment creates opportunities for channel partners to assist with governance, security, cost management, and accountability.

Despite economic uncertainties, over three-quarters of SMBs maintained or accelerated technology investments, with two-thirds needing to adopt AI immediately or within six months. Key concerns for SMBs regarding AI risk include data security and privacy, underscoring the need for robust governance frameworks and the potential for IT service providers to fill this gap.
