MSSP Acquired: Appalachia Technologies Acquires Cyber Protection Group

Appalachia Technologies, a Top 250 MSSP with roughly 50 employees, has acquired Cyber Protection Group (CPG), a cybersecurity company and compliance-focused firm. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

This is technology M&A deal number 177 that MSSP Alert and sister site ChannelE2E have covered so far in 2022.

The Buyer and Seller

About the Buyer: Appalachia -- founded in 2004 by Mike Romano and Brian Stone -- is headquartered in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. The company maintains a vendor-neutral position focused on such services as:

  • Security Assessments
  • Penetration Testing
  • Vulnerability Scanning
  • Managed Threat Detection and Response
  • Firewall, VPN and Perimeter Security

About the Seller: Cyber Protection Group founder and vCISO Mike Miller is a cybersecurity professional with 25 years of experience throughout the IT industry. He has focused on security, specializing in the areas of Virtual Chief Information Security Officer services, Governance, Risk, and Compliance, PCI, SOC, Intrusion Detection, Penetration Testing, and Incident Response.

In a prepared statement about the deal, Miller said:

Appalachia M&A Experience

This is Appalachia's third acquisition since 2020. The other two deals involved:

  • Stronghold Cyber Security, with specialization in CMMC, NIST, and DFARS compliance consulting to defense contractors
  • PremierComm’s Unified Communications and Collaboration division, adding service capabilities while complementing cybersecurity services.
