AI accelerates cyber threats, demanding proactive OT security

Artificial intelligence is increasingly lowering the barrier for cyberattacks against operational technology (OT) environments, making sophisticated techniques more accessible and scalable for threat actors. Industrial organizations face amplified risks due to aging assets, fragmented architectures, and limited visibility, all while grappling with the severe operational and financial consequences of plant downtime, according to TahawulTech report.

Naman Taldar of Rockwell Automation emphasizes that AI is not introducing entirely new risks but amplifying existing ones by automating reconnaissance, vulnerability research, and malware development. This allows less sophisticated attackers to conduct more advanced attacks at greater speed and scale. Foundational to managing OT cyber risk is asset visibility, which remains a challenge due to diverse, multi-vendor equipment spanning decades and often poor documentation. Without knowing what assets exist and how they interact, organizations struggle to assess risk, prioritize investments, or respond effectively to threats.

Taldar advocates for a shift from reactive to proactive, risk-based security programs, focusing on business risk rather than solely technology. This involves identifying critical assets, evaluating operational impacts, and aligning cybersecurity investments with operational resilience, safety, and productivity. Viewing cybersecurity through the lens of operational continuity makes it easier to justify initiatives that improve visibility, reduce threat exposure, enhance monitoring, and accelerate recovery, ultimately protecting long-term competitiveness.
