McAfee Launches MVISION Cloud Native Application Protection Platform

McAfee has released the MVISION Cloud Native Application Protection Platform (CNAPP), which provides data protection, threat prevention, governance and compliance across the cloud-native application development lifecycle for container and operating system-based workloads. The company originally announced CNAPP in October 2020.

CNAPP extends MVISION Cloud's data protection capabilities to cloud-native applications, McAfee said. It blends cloud security posture management (CSPM) for public cloud infrastructure with cloud workload protection (CWP) to secure cloud-native apps distributed across virtual machines (VMs), compute instances and containers.

The launch is part of McAfee's enterprise security software business, which private equity firm Symphony Technology Group (STG) is acquiring for $4 billion, the companies disclosed in March 2021.

What Does CNAPP Offer?

Key features of CNAPP include:

  • Deep discovery of workloads, data and infrastructure
  • Ability to prioritize security risk based on misconfigurations, software vulnerabilities and sensitive data
  • Protection against configuration drift
  • Automated assessment across VMs, containers and developer pipelines
  • Data loss prevention (DLP) scanning

In addition, CNAPP allows organizations to automate their security controls for continuous compliance and governance, McAfee indicated. CNAPP also enables security operations centers (SOCs) to map cloud-native threats to the MITRE ATT&CK framework.

What Does CNAPP Mean for McAfee?

The CNAPP launch is one of several moves McAfee has used to accelerate its cybersecurity market growth in March 2021.

McAfee announced zero trust network access (ZTNA) partnerships with Appgate, Axis Security and TransientX. With the partnerships, these cybersecurity vendors have joined McAfee's Security Innovation Alliance (SIA) program and integrated their offerings with McAfee Endpoint Security and MVISION Unified Cloud Edge solutions.
