Core Security by HelpSystems Adds Ransomware Simulator to Pentesting Solution

Cybercrime, piracy and data theft. Network security breach. Compromised computer showing skull and bones symbol. Digital 3D rendering concept.

Core Security, a division of cybersecurity and automation software provider HelpSystems, has integrated a ransomware simulator into its Core Impact penetration testing solution. In doing so, Core Impact users can conduct pentests that simulate ransomware attacks, the company said.

Security teams can use the ransomware simulator in conjunction with a phishing campaign pentest, Core Security noted. They can then mimic the behavior of multiple ransomware families, encrypt user-specified files and exfiltrate files. This can help security teams determine which data is most at risk during a ransomware attack.

A View to A Ransomware Attack

In addition, the ransomware simulator offers automatic rollback after a set amount of time, Core Security said. This allows security teams to view a ransomware attack's impact, then automatically reset their environment to its original conditions. From here, security teams can use the simulator once again to see how corrective measures can be used to minimize a ransomware attack's impact.

The ransomware simulator also enables security teams to create and leave explanatory README files following exercises, Core Security said. These files inform users that they have experienced a ransomware scenario and can prompt them to contact a security team or provide other next steps.

HelpSystems Acquires Terranova Security, Alert Logic

The Core Security ransomware simulator announcement comes after HelpSystems in April 2022 purchased Terranova Security, a phishing simulation and security awareness training company. Since that time, HelpSystems has added Terranova's training security awareness platform to its security suite.

In March 2022, HelpSystems acquired Alert Logic, a Top 40 MDR (managed detection and response) security provider and Top 250 MSSP. Alert Logic's MDR services have been integrated into HelpSystems' cybersecurity portfolio.

HelpSystems is owned by private equity firms Harvest Partners, TA Associates, Charlesbank Capital Partners and HelpSystems employees. The company offers data security, infrastructure protection and other cybersecurity solutions. MSSPs and MSPs can join HelpSystems' partner program to integrate the company's cybersecurity solutions into their portfolios.
